Do It Yourself: 3 Tips to Home Business Review and Due Diligence

February 3, 2009

The reason why I write home business reviews is so that my reader can be informed BEFORE laying down their hard earned cash (especially in the state of the economy right now). There are thousands of online business opportunities and too many to write about all in one place.

Here’s a few tips that I will pass on so that YOU can ‘Do It Yourself’ and come to a decision during your home business review and due diligence process.

The first thing I do is STOP. Take a deep breath and put on my goggles of wisdom. This is really important as many of the sales pages and business overviews are designed to pull on your psychological triggers. Marketers have spent thousands upon thousands of dollars to learn how to write, position, and speak in a way to get you to take action - and sometimes at all cost.

So as you are doing your research, remember to look at the big picture and think clearly.

Ok, after you have a clear mind, look at these 3 Home Business Review Success Tips to ensure proper due diligence.

Home Business Review Tip #1
Is there a REAL product or is it just based upon an empty marketing system to recruit distributors.

So many of the companies that are found online are based solely on you finding others to recruit in the business. Without a customer base and REAL product that customers (not distributors) actually use - the life cycle of the opportunity will diminish quickly. You wouldn’t set up shop at a mall and sell more space at the mall would you? That would be absurd. There are only so many merchants that can rent space to sell their product.

Also, it’s important that the product solves a REAL problem. Is it health, nutrition, or weight loss? What’s your USP (unique selling proposition). Is it a service? Can I buy the service somewhere else WITHOUT the business opportunity for less money? These are all questions that should be considered BEFORE signing the dotted line.

There are a few exceptions and those are few and far between.

Home Business Review Tip # 2
How Long has the company been around?

There are THOUSANDS of Network Marketing and Direct Sales companies. And hundreds more open up shop every year. It can be very exciting to get involved in a company that is ground floor, however there are certain risks involved if you want to build a LONG TERM organization. Hey, I’m guilty of getting involved in a few companies that were so brand new that we didn’t know what to expect. And YES it did come back to bite me in the shorts later on.

Home Business Review Tip #3
Who are the Founders and Leadership?

This is important because every leader has a shadow. The shadow has a way of leaving a reputation. And most likely if the leader has a reputation (positive or negative) - it will be written about on the internet. Don’t believe everything you read on the internet - just do your research. Has the founder or leader been involved in shady business practices? Does the founder or leader have any complaints listed? If so what for, and were they resolved?

By doing some basic due diligence, you’ll be able to CHOOSE an opportunity and business that is right for you. Above all else, make sure you pursue a product and business that you are absolutely PASSIONATE about.
